Account for the J-curve in early-vintage funds. A fund in years 1-3 showing sub-1.0x MOIC is not necessarily underperforming. Vintage diversification matters more than most LPs realize. Institutional endowments managing PE allocations of $50M+ consistently stagger commitments across multiple vintage years to smooth the J-curve impact on portfolio-level liquidity and MOIC. A single large commitment to one vintage year concentrates both the J-curve drag and the market cycle risk. Spreading $2M-$3M across three to four vintage years produces a more predictable return profile.
Manager selection is the highest-leverage decision. The performance gap between top-quartile and median PE funds is far wider than in public markets.
